In the Magistrate's Court 'to-day, before Mr. ,E. Page, S.M., Richard Patterson, a, dentist's.'mechanic, aged 32, pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting a girl,; and"-' to a further charge of behaving in a. disorderly manner in Lloyd*street while drunk..
_ Senior-Sergeant Scott said . that a girl, aged 4* years, was playing outside , her parents' residence in Lloya streets yesterday, afternoon and : was given a, penny by the ; accused, who took her by the hand and "commenced to lead her away. The child's' parents saw what had happened and called to her to come 4 inside, but she replied that the man had given her a penny and she would have to go with him.' Several other people saw what happened and endeavoured to get: hold of the. accused, who ran away. He, was subsequently arrested by a traffic inspector and held until the arrival ;of the. police. "We have received numerous complaints from parents of young children in the district that persons have been known to lead children away to parks or reserves and there interfere with them," said Mr. Scott.
The accused was .fined £5 on the charge of assault and £2 for behaving in a disorderly, manner. Default of payment Mjas fixed at 21 days' imprisonment in each case. .; .
