OUTRAGE AT MELROSE

A determined and apparently premeditated robbery was carried out in Wellington late on Friday ■ afternoon last when a young woman employed as a clerk in the office of the Karitane Products Society, Ltd., was assaulted in Melrose and robbed of approximately £40.

The young lady, who is about 23 years of age, -was taking the wages to the factory at'Melrose at about a quarter to five in the afternoon. She decided to take a short cut through the grounds, but just after she had climbed through a fence a, masked man jumped out at her and rubbed pepper and salt in her face. He knocked her down, punched and bruised her, and then made off -with the bag, which contained wages amounting to over £40.

Although dazed and suffering considerable pain, the young lady went for assistance quickly, but by this time her assailant had escaped. She suffered severely from shock and is still confined to bed. Detectives are inquiring into the matter.
