NAVY DEFEATS MARIST.
A bright exhibition of Soccer was given on No. 1 ground at the Basin Reserve, where a team representing the Navy met Marist. The Navy -won by 5 goals to L-. In the first spell there -was little between the sides, and though the Navy led 2-1 at half-time, the indications were that the game would be closely contested in the second half. This, however, was not the case. The Navy eleven proved far too strong for Marist, and finished easy winners. The teams were:— The Navy: Ellman; Kenton, Miles; Bradley, Clark, Hill; Ellwell, McNally, Leonard, Haines, Scott. Marist: Turkington; Kelly, Laracy; Hindle, Bird, Quirke; Barton, Condon, Marshpent, Scott, Hawken. . Marist attacked from the start, Barton being prominent in a fine run. The Navy retaliated, and scored in the first five minutes of the game. A strong forward attack saw the Marist' defence tried, and McNally was successful in breaking through and netting with a "header." Navy 1, Manet 0. Another fine run was made by Barton, Marist's right winger, but he left his shot too late. Marist gained a corner, and Condon's attempt at goal went well over the net. Hawken figured in another Marist attack, and he transferred the ball. It travelled to Marshment arid back to Scott, bu tha latter had no chance to goal, Ellman coming well out to clear. The Marist forwards maintained the attack, and at last broke through, Condon netting with a fast shot. 1-1. Haines was identified in a strong Navy attack, but he could not make an opening. The Marist backs were called on to defend for a considerable period, and then play swung to the other goal. Marist had a glorious opportunity, but missed an open goal. A strong Navy attack ended with Scott sending in a stinging shot which'Turkington tipped, for a. corner. .■ This was followed with a hard shot from EllwelJ
taken at short range. Turkington made a good save. After a fairly lengthy period of quiet play, the Navy scored. Clark beat his opponents, and sent in a ground shot, which Turkington failed to hold. .Navy 2, Marist 1. For the remainder of the spell, the Navy attacked, but Marist kept their goal clear. The Navy kept attacking when the game was resumed. Early in the spell Haines manoeuvred for position, and, taking time, netted with a first-class shot. 3-1. Not long afterwards, the Navy were awarded a corner, and Haines scored with a "first-timer." 4-1. Marist by no means were disheartened, and an attack in which Barton and Condon were prominent was very nearly successful. However, it was not long before Marist were again called on to defend. Haines and Clark tested Turkington, but the latter was safe A few minutes later/Clark shot again,'the ball this time finding the net. Navy 5 Marist 1. There was no further score
