TOBACCO LEAF PURCHASE

MELBOURNE, This. Day. Mr. H. S. Gullett, Minister of Trade, announces that manufacturers have offered to purchase at least 7,200,000 pounds of the current season's tobacco leaf at an average price of 2a 3d a pound, the leaf to be fine cured, properly graded, and a reasonable quality. GODFREY, PHILLIPS TOBACCO. LONDON, 29th March. "The Australian company has not leached the profit-making stage," declared Mr. Arthur Phillips, presiding at the annual meeting of Godfrey, Phillips, Ltd., the tobacco firm. He said that $he difficulties created by the political troubles had been far greater than was anticipated. "I am still hopeful that the Australian company -will make good, though I do not expect an immediate profit," he said. "If eventually it results in a loss it will make the smallest impresteion on our reserves."
