EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

The Eastbourne Borough Council .held; its monthly meeting last night. The Mayor (Mr. S. F. Fisher) presided and there were also present Councillors J. 3T. Eookstrow, E. N. Battersby, Margaret Magill, A. Varney, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, C..A. Eendle, and E. W. Wise.

The Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) was appointed to represent the council on the Technical Committee of the Town Planning Institute. '

Koffe waited on the council as "a deputation from the Wellington Free Ambulance to ask for the council's sub- ' sidy, which last year was reduced to ";:£25, to be brought to its former level ;.of £50. They recognised the financial - difficulties of the times but' wanted to avoid the necessity of having to draw on capital.

The council will consider the matter |when. framing next year's estimates.

Traffic returns for February, with figures for February, 1931, in parentheses, were presented as follows:— :Muritai: Passengers carried, 31,041 (25,644); round trips 52 (46); distance steamed, 780 miles (690 miles); oil fuel ■used, 27 tons (24.5). Cobar: Passengers carried, 16,142 (14,902); round tripa, 139 (132);. distance steamed, 2080 piles. (1980),; coal used, 61 tons (56). During the month the buses ran 511 .trips to Wellington, covering' 18,374 miles. (20,030), and using 1937 (2133) gallons of benzine.

No infectious diseases were notified in.' the borough in February. . A letter from the Wellington Automobile Club asking for co-operatioa in .•preventing wilful dama.ge to its road .signs was "received." ."I don't .think there is any damage in our district," remarked the Mayor.

... The monthly leport of the Town Clerk said that to the end of February $500 of tie current year's rates had .teen collected. This represented 82 .per cent, of the total amount struck. The erection of the bathing shelter near the Rona "Bay "Wharf entrance had been completed.

February traffic receipts in the bus department showed a falling off of approximately £200, making a total falling off for the eleven months of £1800. Trading expenditure for the same period fell by approximately £700, so that the net result of trading in this department would be approximately £1000 worse than last year. Despite this decline in revenue, a net profit was likely to be shown in this department for the current year.

The ferry traffic receipts in February were slightly higher than those of February last year. Receipts for the eleven months were approximately £700 lower than last year, and the expenditure was-also £700 lower.
