THIS MORNING'S GALLOPS
ITEMS FOR DANNEVIRKE
(By "Rangatira.")
Although the Wellington Meeting is. only just over a week off, there is no particular activity at Trentham at present, and this morning only a few horses were required to go fast. The others with engagements at the meeting were given easy pace work or exercise only. The plough was exclusively used, and was fast.
: Autopay (A. Leach) ? -started off by Kilstar. (C. Willis) ran half''a: mile while it was still dark, and was timed to cover the distance iff 52 4--ssec comfortably. It could' not be" discerned, which of the pair was first to pass the half-mile post, and as there was then some lengths between them, Autopay Js figures might have been better than the watch indicated. ' ■ ' ':
Normandy (H. Hunt) and Rod Sun (N. S. Jones) did their first fast work since their return from Te Aroha, the former not being caught on his halfmile, but the latter following and registering 50 4-ssec for the same distance. Both, horses have much improved in appearance during the last month or so. Sir Pombal (G. F. Dick) and Gaysong (W. E. Shand) did separate rounds of cantering,- speeding up to three- [ quarter pace over the last'three furlong'si I Weatlier'step (Shand) again gave evidence of her brilliance by beating Moab Queen (Dick) by nearly three lengths over half a mile in 49see. She is a highly-strung mare, and takes some time to settle down after fast work. Moab Queen's effort was also satisfactory, and M-as as good as anything she lias yet done. Eed Top (S. Wilson) slipped over three furlongs alone in 38 2-ssec. Gold Sand (W. Brough'ton) was1 under hard restraint to register 40sec for the same distance, and could not be pulled up till she had gone another couple of furlongs. Flower- (G. Williams) was given a couple of rounds of cantering. She left later for Danncvirke, where she is to race to-morrow. She'will be ridden by A. Jenkins in the Highweight Handicap, and may also be started in the hack. seven later on. in the day. As Blacksmith is an improbable starter in the highweight, Flower, has 'a^ good chance of increasing her stake earnings. She is going to Ellerslie at Easter to contest the Great Northern Oaks'. |
Historic, who is beginning to fine down to racing shape, is having plenty of steady work put into him, and this morning' he did a round at half-pace, then trotted a round, and finally cantered two further rounds. :
Joie de Val (Shand) sprinted six furlongs alone in Imin 16 4-ssec, doing the last half-mile in 50 2-ssec.
Mullaboden (Wilson), with Royal Game (Williams) to accompany him, did an easy six furlongs in lmin 22 2-5 see, being shaken up over, the last furlong and heading off his companion before reaching the post. ' This Englishbred colt • has at last thrown off the lameness that was so long manifest, and is now being tried out to see whether he will make a stayer. -. ■
. Marjoram (Dick), picked up by Colossicai (Shand)', at the three furlongs, ran five furlongs in lmin 3 2-ssec, the last three furlongs in 37 3-ssee. The two-year-old beat him home narrowly.
Araios (Wilson) followed with five furlongs in lmin 4 2-ssec, the final halfmile in 50 3-ssec. His teething trouble has been righted, and he ,is now beginning to muscle up better, though he is still very ■ sparingly covered, and will probably require more time yet.
Lyrical (Broughton) and Lady Rene. (E. E. Bush) ; did an easy six furlongs in lmiii 22 3-sscc, working more easily than their respective trainers intended.
Broughton. will be riding at Dannevirke- to-morrow, where his mounts will include Alpinist; Lady Alert, Lady Eonaid, and probably Teller. Later on: he will be going to Australia ■to ride Messrs. D. Hr--:McLeod and' C. H. Slater's pair, Araunah and Lady Alert, who are leaving for Sydney on Friday week. '■ i.
