THREE MONTHS' GAOL
"A WELSHING BOOKMAKER-
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
AUCKLAND, 7th March.
"He's purely a welshing bookmaker who has been living on the sweat of working men," stated Detective-Sergeant Kelly when Michael Patrick David Hayes, aged 32, appeared at the Police Court and pleaded guilty to being an idle and disorderly person and carrying on the business of bookmaker.
Detective Moore said that numerous complaints were heard about Hayes not paying out.
Counsel said that the accused was only in a small way of business as bookmaker, and he was in a position to pay out. The Magistrate: "Well, he won't pay out for three months, anyway. He is a single man, and has not worked for lour years. I'm not going to allow a big hulking man such as he is to rob people." Hayes was sentenced to three months' imprisonment.
Great interest continues to be taken in the exhibition of British Contemporary Art in the Art Gallery, Whitmore street. There are large attendances daily. The exhibition will be open tonight and to-morrow night.
