BERLIN, 7th March
The "Cologne Gazette" forecasts that President Hindenburg will get 16,000,000 votes, Herr Hitler 12,200,000, Herr Thalmann 4,800,000, and Colonel Duesterberg 1,900,000. Thus a second ballot will be necessary, as it is expected that 35,000,000 will vote, and President Hindenburg will need 17,500,000 votes in event of a second ballot, with a straight fight with Hitler. Thalmann supporters will certainly give the field-marshal a substantial majority. There is a possibility that Colonel Duesterberg will retire in the second ballot to allow a Hohenzollern Prince to be nominated, the purpose being to force Hin« denburg to withdraw.
The ex-Crown Prince and three other Hohenzollerns attended a march of the "Steel Helmets" arranged by the Nationalists.
President Hindenburg has written to a friend,: "If I am not elected on the first ballot, I shall probably withdraw, as I shall then feel that the majority of Germans are hot behind me."
