WAIRUNA HELD UP
DISPUTE WITH THE CREW
THE RATE OF EXCHANGE

AUCKLAND, This Day.
. The Union Company's steamer Wairuna is held up because of a dispute betireen the company and the crew over the rate of exchange between New Zealand and the" United States. The ship arrived on Saturday frorix the Pacific Coast,-and the crew were paid on Monday. ; ■ ■■• ■,■■ -.;■•:-•■ ~..,' While in American ports-some of the crew received advances on their wages, allegedly on an^ understanding that the money they drew would be at a rate of 3.45. dollars to the £1, the rate then! ruling. When these men were paid on Monday the advances were deducted, but the men claimed that the money, should have been'advanced at par,"4.80. When the cargo was discharged the mcii refused to sail until their demands were met. The ship's departure was then, postponed from last iuight till noon, but at. 1 o'clock this afternoon she had riot gone. It if understood that both, sides are firm.
