THIS MORNING'S WORK
The weather was fine but bleak at Trentham this morning, when-several of the horses leaving for the Marlborough Meeting to-morrow did their final gallops. . • None of the rain that fell in the lower valley yesterday was experienced at the course, and the plough, which was exclusively used, was in fast order.
The first horse to gallop fast was Wcatherstep, who, with W. E. Shand in the saddle, slipped over six furlongs in lmin 16 1-osec, doing the final halfmile in 50 2-ssec. She is very well, and is likely to make a showing o the trip. As Gold Sand did not accept for the Pelorus Hack Handicap, W. Broughton will be riding Weatherstep. t J. W. Lowe's team—Normandy, Bed Sun, and Moab Queen—all did strong threequarter-paee work over five furlongs. None have .-immediate engagements. ■
Sailing. (G. F. Dick) : was a length better than Miss Hastings : (Shand) over half a niile.in 50sec. The remaining members of W. Hawthorne's active team—Whito Squall, Gaysong, and Sir Ponibal—all did strong, pace,-work. White Squall Isprinted home the last couple of furlongs-. :. -.:; ■-; None of S. .J.Beicl'steam were required to make figures.- Meritor (W. Broughton) did five furlongs: in Imiri 6 3-ssec, the. last half-mile in :51 3-5 sec. 'Lyrical (J. K. Bobertson) ana Might (Shand) ran six furlongs-in lmin 25see, and Eminent:(J. D. Martin)-did a similar task in similar time. Clangor worked easily, and Historic • (Martin) did a couple of steady rounds on the plough. The first racing for tho team will be at Woodville. .
Shootist (J. 1\ Nicholson), going nicely, was: many, lengths too good for Camp (S.Wilson) over five furlongs in lmin 5 3-ssec, the last half-milo in 51 4-ssec. Royal Game (Wilson) did six furlongs alone in lmin 17sec, the last half-mile in 51sec —a good gallop for him. Flower and. Mullaboden did pace work only, and Purse was sprinted later on. in the morning. Prince Pombal (Brougliton.). and Tray.mela (A. B. Laeassie) ran an. easy half-mile together in 54 4-ssec, the latter holding a slight advantage at the end. ...-•■■'■■■
Gold Sand (Broughton)' finished a couple of lengths in front of Lady Bene (B. G. Bush) at the close of six furlongs in lmin 17sec, the last half-mile in 52 2-ssec. They "were doing it comfortably till kicked along near the post. Pahu (Bush), after a slow beginning, came strongly at the end of five furlongs to beat the stopping Bright Song (Broughton) by a couple of lengths in lmin 4 3-ssec, the last half-mile in 51 l-ssec. Paliu looks better at present than he has at any time since he joined up with A, Goodman's team;
St. Bogor (A. .O'Neill), who is to race at Woodville, ran an easy halfmile. Late Jest, Lorigan's other Woodville entrant, did pace work only. . Araios (Wilson) did an. easy six furlongs in lmin 23 l-ssec, the last halfmile requiring 56see. Pedestal (Nieholson) was allotted pace.work only. After breakfast T. Pritchard .worked the members of his team. Solitaire 11., ridden by G. Ridgway, who has joined up with Pritchard, did a strong round of pace work.. Autopay (Bidgway.) did a similar task: Retract (Bidgway) was restricted to easier work, but it was of a solid nature.. No rider has yet been engaged for "either "Retractor Solitaire 11. at Blenheim.
Portray, whom ' Pritchard holds* on lease, has been handed over to J.: Kyle, who took. him;: to. Blenheim last. Friday and will stop'therowith: him after the meeting, the intention being to race him later on at the West Coast Easter meetings. " > : " ■■■'-'■ . "■'..
