FREE KINDERGARTENS

LAST YEAR'S RECORD

At a recent meeting of the Free Kindergarten Council the principal, Miss Enid Wilson, reported that last year 776 children passed through the Wellington Free Kindergartens, and that the average roll had been 405, thus giving some idea of the scope of the work in this city.

The kindergartens reopened last week, and are staffed this year as follows:—Taranaki Street: Director, Miss Scott,, with Miss J. Corkill and Miss Preshaw as assistants. Wellington South: Director, Miss N. Eamsay, with Miss Zander as assistant. Newtown: Director, Miss Adams, with Miss Harris as assistant. Berhainpore: Director, Miss Holland. Brooklyn: Director, Miss Gray. Petone: Director, Miss Scaife, with Miss Bradley as assistant. Ngaio: Director, Miss M. Seed. On the opening day council members entertained kindergarten graduates and students, when a happy time was spent in renewing friendships and discussing the work generally. It is proposed to hold a "street day" collection at the end of the month. A large produce stall will be held at Kirkcaldie and Stains, and collectors will be stationed through the | city. Funds are urgently needed this year on account of the withdrawal of Government support, and the public are asked to respond generously to this appeal. In March a garden party will be held at the residence of Mrs. D. C. Peacock. Many supporters of the Free Kindergarten will recall previous parties in her lovely garden. A special vote of thanks was passed to Mr. D. C. Peacock for a generous donation of £20 to the general funds of the association. Thanks were also expressed for the following subscriptions and donations: £6 6s, Lady Beauehamp; £3 3s each, Miss Paulson and Mr. and Mrs. A. Hamilton; £2, Mrs. Cameron; £1 Is each, Miss Wilson, Mr. J. M. A. Ilott; £1, Miss Ewart; 10s each, Mrs. Kane, Ex-Kindergarten Child; 5s each, Mrs. Mirams, Mrs. Clere, Anonymous, and Mrs. Coo-lye.
