FRENCH POPULATION
Statistics of the population of France at the Census taken in March have been published, says the "Daily Telegraph." The most interesting point brought out is that although many writers have deplored France's "falling birth rate" in recent years, there has been a distinct increase in the number of inhabitants since the 1926 Census. In five years the total population has increased by 1,091,----026, while the number of foreigners residing in France has increased by 395,----281._ The total number of inhabitants is given as 41,834,923, of whom 38,944,000 are French and 2,890,923 foreigners. In the_ Department of the Seine alone, which might be compared with the County of London, the population when the Census was taken was 4,933,855. Of these 4,474,357 were French and 459,498 foreigners. The total increase in this Department by comparison with 1926 was 305,218. Statistics for the other Departments show that the Alpes-Mari-times Department, with its many Biviera residents, attracts more foreigners than any other. Here there x were at the time of the Census 140,446 foreigners and 352,930 French people.
