GARDEN DISPLAYS

NGAIO SUMMER SHOW

The annual summer show of the Ngaio Garden Club was held in the Ngaio Town Hall on Saturday evening, and attracted record entries in all sections. The show took the form of competitive displays in which vegetable and flower classes were grouped under inclusive heads. The object of the club is to foster the cultivation of "all-round" gardens, and this year's show was indicative of the excelkut results of the club's efforts.

In the vegetable section some growers exhibited as many as fifteen different species of vegetables, while in the flower section one exhibitor displayed over two dozen varieties. There was a fine show of colour in the cut flower sectiou, .and some excellent display work' by children. The president of the club, Mr. O. Giddall, in introducing Mr. R. A. Wright, M.P., complimented the exhibitors on their fine collections. It was an excellent indication of the interest taken in horticulture in the district. Mr. Wright spoke briefly, and declared the show open. The judge for! the vegetable and flower section was Mr.. F. Westbury. Mrs. Williamson judged the children's classes,' and Mr. A. Giddall the mecanno class. Special-displays were made by Mr. R. H. Johnson, of Earpri, late ' begonias, and Messrs. McLean and Archibald, hydrangeas and dahlias. ; ■ / •

The point prize for the adult classes was won.by. Mrs. H, Ellicbck, and for the children by Miss Esnie Cummings. Successful competitors, were:—Collection of.cv*. flowers arranged for effect: Mrs Williamson, Mrs. .Neely, 2; Mrs. Clothier, 3.; Decorated basket: Mrs. Renton, 1; Mrs. J. C. Thomson, 2; Miss Jean Jamieson, 3. Collection vegetables: Mr Agnew,.l; Mr. G.Bristoe, 2; Mr. J. Williams, 3.

Children's Classes.—Jean Jluncey, 1 first and 1 second; Inez Wilson, 1 second; Valeric Neely, 1 third; Marie HcCrae* 1 third; Esme Cummings, 2 firsts and highly commended; Joan McNab, 1 second and 1 third; Barbara Jerram,. 1 third; Peggy Byres, highly commended; Leonard Astwood, 1 first; Russel Wilson, 1 second; Ross Lenniberg, 1 first; Billy gangster, 1 second; Ronald Bartlet, 1 third. Mrs. Barnett's prize for best essay on the "Wellington Harbour Board's Jubilee Dock," for boys under 15 years, was won by Master Dessis Hodgson, 10 years. Cooking Classes,—-Mrs. Latham, 3 firsts; Mrs. Ellicock. 2 firsts, 2 seconds, and 1 third: Mrs. Foster, 1 second; Mrs. v Jerram, 2 thirds; Mrs. M. Taylor, 1 first and 1 second; Mrs. W.
