FIGURES FOR JANUARY
,A drop of approximately £15,000 is revealed in the net Customs figures for the port of Wellington this month as compared with January last yeai\ As the result of a 50 per cent, increase in the duty, the amount collected on beer haa increased by over £2000, and the addition .of a, special tax of 2d a gallon on petrol has increased the amount received irom .that source. The tire duty shows a drop of about £500.
The figures for this month, with those for January last year in parentheses, are as follows:—Customs duty, £205,956 (£220,594); beer duty, £5804 (£3761)----tire tax, £2184 (£2718); petrol tax, 6d per gallon, £38,427 (£46,215). In addition to the 6d tax there is a special duty on petrol of 2d per gallon, which yielded & 12,809, this amount being included in the Customs duty figures given above. It is paid into the Consolidated Fund, whereas the proceeds of the 6d duty go to the Highways Board funds.
