SONOMA IN A GALE
SOME DAMAGE DONE

. / AUCKLAND; 29th January. On; the second night out from Suva tho liner Sonoma, which arrived today, shipped some particularly heaVy ; seas, which did considerable' damage on tho foredeck and smashed th<y forward rail of the promenade deck flat.
''Some cabins were flooded and, generally speaking/ things were in a bit of a mess," said:on© of the officers on the arrival of the ■vessel, two hours late, to-day. '
Two heavy seas appeared to have done most of the damage, one- green wall of water reaching as high as the navigating bridge. . Fittings were carried away and several windows on the starboard side of the main deckhouso were smashed. Tho usual run of the Sonoma is some 350 miles, a day, but one day this was 'reduced to 241 miles.
