DR. BEGG'S SCHEME
COMMENT BY MINISTER
"FULL CONSIDERATION"
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
HAMILTON,.This Day.
"Without expressing an opinion on the merits of the proposals, it is a good thing to have them made the subject of public discussion," stated the Minister of Health (thfe Hon. J. A. Young), when he,was asked to comment on Dr. Campbell Begg's sekeme for 'reorganising the New Zealand hospital system.
Mr. Young said there was no doubt that the number of hospital boards in the 'Dominion could be reduced with advantage, but the matter;, was, one for Parliament to determine;- as it 'was fixed by statute. Any suggestions emanating front Dr. Begg and taken up by; the various organisations r would be assured of ■ full consideration by the Government, more especially in so far as it;was claimed that the aim of the promoters was to make for economies and efficiency in hospital services. A question of policy was. concerned, and in such circumstances suggestions would require very careful consideration before anything. Was/ done. The main ifesue involved was a matter which must concern Parliament, apart from ; any reorganisation of hospital administration within the scope of the boards' powers. "'..'■'.■
