THE PRICE ASPECT

DESIRE OF THE PRODUCER

(By Telegraph.)

(Special to "The Evening Post.")

PALMERSTON N., This Day. : After a long discussion, yesterday's meeting of the Wellington Provincial Executive of ; the Farmers' Union, held at Peilding, passed the following resolution unanimously:"— _ "This executive strongly supports the Farmers' Exchange Committee in demanding freedom of exchange, and calls upon the Government to immediately abolish the exchange pool, • thus allowing the law of supply and demand to operate without restriction." ■ : , .:

Opening the discussion, the president, Mr. K. W. Dalfymple said it had struck him wherever the exchange question' had been- discussed, that the desire of the primary producer for a free exchange was to obtain higher prices for his products. It was a mistake to allow that impression to go out. The real reason was. to stabilise the country's finances, and it was a pity .that too much stress . had been laid on the view \ that a free . exchange would; bring about higher prices. A. free exchange would bring higher prices temporarily, but the position would soon adjust itself. There was no doubt that a free exchange ivas» the right tiling, but the Government's obligations could not be altogether disregarded. However, his view was that the executive-should protest a'gainsi the regtilatiort of exchange by the Government. . -■■•
