TO CUT THE COST

IN STATE DEPARTMENTS

CHAMBER'S SUGGESTIONS

(By Ttleeraph.) . - ■■ . (Spatial to "The Eyanlna Part.") v AUCKLAND, Thi» Day. Various miggestions v for furtaet;; economies in the Government Depart*rteats have been made by the Auckland ' Chamber of Commerce to the Associated Chambers of Commerce, in view"~of the pending investigations of the USeov nomy Commission." - "" ' ' ..' The chamber considers that substtn- x tial savings could be made by stiff .and" > salary adjustments,' by a'more eonser-1 vative policy with regard, .'to the erection of new buildings, by curtailing' much unnecessary travelling at fthe j State expense, by reduced running of official motor-cars, and by fewer trans-* fers over long distances of subordinate Civil servants. Numerous other directions in which savings could be made; are indicated. ' ' ' "The general comment may be mad* that administration*' coats mutt to.re-, duced, and it' would appear that' at' least a 25 per cent, reduction if essential to ensure stability," states the chamber. <■ r ' , Following are sqme,of the instances in wliich the Auckland Chamber'considered-, thcre^ should, be savings:— The services conducted by* the Maul Pomare had been provided only at a> steady loss. The Island 'dependencies seemed id be more expensive, than necessary. A more conservative policy, shouli be exercised .with regard to neWjbmld. ings in the Dominion., * v * ' ' v There, was unnecessary travelling by Cabinet Ministers to attend local functions', and openings; use pt official eata by Government officials after hours. - "Hansard" should be modified and; less freely circulated. ' L Many returns appearing in ih« "Gazette" could be>eliminated.. Small repairs to Government buildings could be done cheaper if handled locally and,not by; the.Poblia Works Department, ' ' ' ' ' i> all probability substantial' economies would 'accrue if Departments' wer» allowed to" obtain stationery and printing otherwise than from the,'Goyernment Printing .Office; the' Public Works Department should, be .drastically, re-' vised. * There should be economy Jin. educstion by. drastic, revision of the ires)1 place system. ' . , Some of the more recent aoeial services that have been grafted on to,the Education and Health Departments appear to be of the tfrder of luxuries.-
