RATE COLLECTION
COMING IN FAIRLY WELL
THE PENALTY DATE
A Press Association message from Dunedin yesterday stated that on the last day prior to the imposition of the 10 per cent, penalty for late payment & 70,000 was taken at the rates-counter there. ••Tho figuro is large, but is not very much out of the ordinary. Last year the" last few days' -rush to avoid the 10 peT cent, penalty brought over £72,000 to the Wellington rates counter, and the same thing/ is expected this year. Taking everything- into account^ the rates arc coming in fairly well, but it is not easy to mako a comparison with last year, as the, demands were this year issued considerably later than last year. The last day for avoidance of the penalty last year was 31st January, but this year the last day is 17th February. / Up to Wednesday evening the amount received at the rates office was £55,090 down on the total up till that date last year, but, as stated above, that is no comparison, as the penalty date i over a fortnight later this year. In addition to, payments of this year's rates, about £12,000 of rates overdue from previous year 3 has been paid in.
