EASTBOURNE AFFAIRS

The Mayor (Mr. S. "F. "Fisher) presided over the monthly meeting of tho Eastbourne Borough Council last night. There were also present Councillors E. N.Batterslay, Margaret Magill, A. Variicy, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, and C. A. Reudlc. A letter from the ■Wellington Automobile Club asking: the council to establish a headlight-tesihg stand in the borough was favourably received, and referred'to the Works Committee, with power to. act. . - The council raised no objection, to tho operation .of a horse-float at. 80 miles aii'. hpiir, iustead of at the 21.06 miles an hour fixed by the regulations. Councillors thought that tho borough would not be affected by the decision, as • horse-floats-, never visited it. Permits for additions and repairs, valued at '£. 60, to two buildings -were issued.in December. ..'. No cases of infectious disease were notified in the borough in December. ', Traffic for December, with figures for December, 1930, in parentheses, wore as follows:—T.S.S. Muritai: Passengers carried, 23,854 (24,333); distance steamed, 810 miles (765); round trips, 54 (51); oil fuel used, 27.75 tons (26.5). S.S. Cobar: Passengers carried, 21,694 (20,056); distance-steamed, 2235 miles (2130); round trips, 149 . (142); coal used, 63 tons (61). During the month the buses ran 555 trips to Wellington, covering 20,370 pules,*., and using 2109. gallons of benzine. This was 2380 miles less than in December, 1930, and the benzine used Was, 324 gallons less. ~ . The. Town Clerk (Mr.- C. L. Bishop), in-his'report for December, said that to the end' of the month £4350 had been .collected inyrates as compared with £5025 to. the same: date the previous year. A slower.influx of ratea than in previous years had been anticipated, and the percentage collected compared favourably with that of other boroughs. The bathing shelter at Rpna Bay should be ready for use before tho end of January.. Traffic; in; the ferry department ,-was satisfactory, the takings for the month equalling those f6r the previous December. The: revenue to- the end of December was- between &ZOQ and £400 less,, than that for the same period of 1930, but-the decrease was more than met by'the decrease in expenditure. Receipts in the'bus department for the month were approximately £200 less; than, those for December, 1930. To the end of December the decline in receipts .was-approximately 15 per cent., and the decline in expenditure was 7$ per cent. The financial results in this department ■ would not be nearly as : good as. in previous years, but with the reduction in expenditure the posi-tion-would bo satisfactory.
