LOCAL ALLOCATIONS

In order to remove possible misconceptions in regard to the allocation of the funds to the local Unemployment Committee by the Unemployment Board,; the chairman of the committee (Miv 'J. I. Goldsmith) : made the following statement to a "Post" reporter to-day:— •'••

"The allocation under Scheme No. s—computed' arid mad& in .four-weekly X>oriods —for the four-weekly period ending 2nd January, was £.1.8,615, and in addition a special Christmas grant of £2005 was made. I'or the four weeks ending 30th January the total amount allocated was £18,599, both, periods being_ based on the same rates per registration. For the period ending 30th January, however, at the re-quest-of the local committee, the proportions allocated for each week were varied—£62oo being allocated for the first of tho four weeks, and £4133 for each of the following three weeks. "This request to have three-nintbs of the1 allocation in; the first week, and only two-ninths in each of'the-subse-quent weeks, 'Alias' developed. a wrong impression that ' the; Unemployment Board had cut the allocation. Had the allocation, for these; fpur weeks been made on an equal basis, the amount each week would have been £4650. Prior to December, for, tho weeks ending 2Sth November and* oth December, the amount provided in each, week was £4002, so that actually the allocations in-January are slightly higher, owing to increased registrations. Since the allocation for January was made, the registrations have increased in "Wellington very greatly* and the board has now correspondingly increased the amount for distribution under the No. 5 scheaao for the two weeks ending 23rd and 30th January." !
