NORTH ISLAND FINALS

OPEN CHAMPIONSHIP TO MRS. TIFFEN

(By Telegraph.) (Special to "The Evening Post.") PALMEKSTON N., 13th January. The North Island croquet tourney was concluded to-day in bright sunshine and on fast greens. The North Island open championship was wou by Mrs. Tiftcn, Napier, who defeated Mr. W. J. llobertson, Mauaivatu, 26-2 i, 26-23. The iirst game was a disappointing, exhibition, Mrs. 'JL'ifleu playing steadily, and j Mr. Robertson playing under his usual lorn). Both players made breaks o£ ten, but the game euded with" Mrs. Tiifen four in the lead. In the second game .Robertsou showed better form, though Mrs. Tilt'eu appeared to have the game in hand. Mrs, Tiifen commenced with a four break, | failing at-one back, Kobertson making only one hoop. Mrs. Tifl'eu maintained her lead until the yellow failed at two back, Kobertson hittiug in a shot at the line and separating the balls to lie up for a blue. Shortly afterward Kobertson made a nine break. Mrs. Tiffen maintained her lead until the end of the game, to annex the title for the second time, with a three-point lead over Kobertson.

Mrs. Tiffen played steadier and was more consistent, ■ though it appeared in the second game, at one or two stages, that Kobertson might run out the'winner. ' ■ . ■ ■ ■.-■•'

The final of the women's championship was contested between Mrs. Caldov.-, Wellington, winner of the first life, and Mrs. Anstis, Palmerston North, winner of the second life. Mrs. Galdow won the first game easily, 16-2, but in the second game Mrs. Anstis gave a better exhibition, and was only defeated 26-20.

The final' of the championship "doubles was played this afternoon, Mrs. Watkins, Hastings, and Mrs. Tiffen, Napier, defeating Mr. Simpson and Mrs. Anstis. Palmerston North, 26-23.

The final' of the handicap singles was won by Mrs. Anstis, Takaro (1), who defeated Mrs. Kadford, Manawatu (5), 26-4. . . ;
