BOWLING

DOMINION TOURNEY

FEATURES OF THE PLAY

HATAITAI PAIR DO WELL

(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) CHRISTCHURCH, 13th January. To-day play was commenced in the pairs championship of the New Zealand bowling tournament. Way generally in section A was of a modest standard, the only noteworthy incident being a fighting finish staged by .Nicholls in his game against Piper (Matai). On the sixteenth head the scores were IG-0 in favour of the Nelson pair, but Eales and Nicholls put on 6, A, 3, and 1 in succession, Piper getting two on the last head. A feature in section Al was the splendid games played by Rolls (Fcatherston); who, despite the handicap occasioned by the loss of one leg, demonstrated sound ability throughout, and thoroughly merited his three victories.

At no stage of any game did . the Duueumites, Morrison and Gardiner, appear in difficulties, and a continuation of their form will find them disputing the final issue.

The Aucklanders, Breinncr and Hardlcy, were hard put to it to stave off Hinchcliif and Seddon. The game was full of interest from the first bowl to the last, with the Auckland men just shading their opponents.

Gregory and Deare (Dunedin), who were associated in last season's champion rink, proved too good for the opposition in Section E, 'and it would occasion little surprise if they met their rink fellows, Morrison and Gardner, in the final for the pairs. They are a nicely balanced pair, and if Deare has maintained last year's form he should go near to repeating his rink victory. After his brilliant form in the singles it was reasonable to look to Routley to hold at bay his opponents on the Cashmere green, particularly when he had such a fine partner as Gray. He was, perhaps, a trifle unfortunate not to record three wins, Howarth, touching shim pfi in the last head.

Chief interest in Section X centred in the winning efforts o£ the two Dicksons, father and son, the latter acting as skip. Wellings and McWhannell, the solid Hataitai pair, and Lewis and Recce (United) came through section Ml unscathed, MeWhannell impressing most. The game between J. Doolan and W. Anderson (Duuedin) and R B. Elliott and D. Martin (Frankton) was very exciting. On the 20th- head Doolan lay three, Anderson improving the position ,to six} but Martin played a perfect draw to lay the second shot. Anderson wanted three to win on the last head, and after some excellent drawing, managed to survive by a single. ' One of the'finest games of the day was that between Sewell and West (Edgeware) and . McMillan and Jack (Wanganui). All of them were drawing very accurately, and on one occasion ten bowls lay within eighteen inches of the kitty.

The greens played faster than on either of the previous days, and again gave players a perfect surface. > The following skips are the leaders in their respective.sections:—
