TO STOP FLOODING

PETONE PLAYING FIELD

LEVEL BEING RAISED

In the past the. lower portion of the Petono Befereation Ground, that is, all that part of the ground ■ outside of and to the north of the Oval,-has been subject to flooding in the winter time., : Footballers and hockey .: players who have been put to inconvenience by this will.be pleased to learn that the trouble should not occur again, for the ground, which is about seven acres in area, is being raised an average of eleven inches by relief work under the control of the Pctono Borough Council.' The filling is brought from the sandhills in the vicinity of Jessie and East streets, and will.be laid onthe ground fifteen inches deep at the/southern end, tapering to nothing at the northern end. The new level will have a-very slight fall towards, the north. The present, turf will be removed before tho sand is" spread and replaced afterwards. The 'ground will be ready for use again within a very short time after it has been treated. The men have started on the east side of the ground and are working towards the west. Progress has been rather slow since operations were begun early last week, on account of the fact that the work is being done on what was formerly a trotting track, and the' turf is very tight, but it is hoped to be clear of the football and hockey grounds by the ena of April, so that they may be used during the season.

About thirty men are at present on the job, and the number will be increased to fifty at a later date, the total being limited by the cartage facilities available. It is a No. 5 scheme work, the council getting the labour, at no cost. <

North Park, across Udy street from the Recreation Ground, will be ready for use this football season. It will probably hold two grounds, each 65 by 100 yards, which is an ample size for the lower grades.
