ACCIDENT TO MURITAI
TROUBLE WITH STEERING
GEAR
An unusual accident befell the Eastbourne ferry steamer Muritai last evening, tho steering gear getting out of order shortly after the ferry left Wellington on tho 5.15 p.m. trip to the Bay. • The Muritai was off, the Clyde Quay Wharf when ..tho trouble occurred, and as there was a southerly breeze blowing sho was hoaded towards Oriental Bay, the twin screws being used to keep the vessel under control and prevent her from drifting. Had it been necessary the Muritai -could have reached Eastbourne without assistance, but it was de*ci.'led to await the Cobar, which was on ber way across from the other side of the harbour. In tho meantime, however, the tug Natone, ■ which was returning from attending to a coal hulk, came on the scene, and> escorted the ship back to, the wharf, which was reached at 6 o'clock. The passengers were transhipped to tho Cobar, which left on her usual" trip at 6J.0 p.m. taking about 600 passengers. The ferry service -was necessarily curtailed to-da.y, but it is expected that the Muritai will resume her usual timetable some time to-morrow.
