On the Stock Exchange to-day there was a welcome improvement in the volume of business, and a.njuch brighter tone, the inquiry embracing a much wider range of stocks. During the four' days the Exchange has been.operating since the holidays,: most bonds have advanced by £2. The shorter-dated issues are most popular, notably^ i per cents., 1938, which moved up £2 12s 6d, and 1944 and 1947, each of which gained,;£2,los. The greatest gain. was_ Reflected by 1959, which added £2 issr since liist year's" closing figure. /Australian :i Consolidated -Bonds and stocks continued, their upward run, 4 per cent. 1938VBonds selling at £95105, showing a' 10s risV,:-and-^finishing :atr £95 7s 6d. -The 1941 Bonds found at. £94 17s 6d;. 19'47'srsola 2ffs higher at £94 10s, and- the -1951^59- Bonds- had sales: at £94 12s 6d.
There was., a. little .more activity in banks, '-.and Bank of" Ne* - South Wales recovered-5s at £30 15s. Commercial Bank of Australia were at 16s 3d, and Commercial Banking Co., of Sydney. £17 7s 6d. Queensland National Bank' found a buyer at £6 Is. 'New Zealand-Government stocks, SM; per.cent., 1937, had a sale at £112.
Other sales were:—Goldsbrdugh, Mort., 27s 9d; Colonial Sugar, £45; Broken Hill Proprietary, 17s l%d; Broken Hill South, 46s 3d; Dunlop-Pedriau, 14s 3d; British Tobacco, 2<ki Gd; Zinc Corporation, 30s 4%d. i -. . . ...
