DISASTROUS FIRES
STRICKEN COUNTRYSIDE
FEELING OF DESPERATION
(Received sth. January, 1 p.m.) , SYDNEY, This Day. Desperation is gripping tho Western fire-fighters. They are taking any risks in the effort to stem the grass fires, and serious casualties ac feared if the high winds, which began last night, continue. The front is now over four hundred miles, and about a million and a half acres have been burnt. There are fresh outbreaks everywhere.
The Weather Bureau offers no hope of rain, for which prayers are being offered up in the churches.
Throe thousand sheep at Hillston were blinded by smoke, trapped, and perished. Graziers are finding dead sheep everywhere. The secretary of the Graziers' Association has appealed to the Government for help.
