(Received sth January, 1 p.m.) PEKIN, 4th January. A dispatch to the American Legation states that Mr. Culver Chamberlain, of the American Consular Service, was beatcu by Japajiese soldiers at Mukden. I The Japanese stopped his car, and when Mr. Chamberlain produced his passport he was punched in the face. His injuries are not serious.

The American Consul has protested to the Japanese authorities.
