SCENES AT ARREST

GANDHI CHEERFUL
(Beceived sth January, 11 a.m.) LONDON,- 4th January. Police Commissioner Wilson and five officers arrived in a car and awakened Gandhi, who was sleeping in a tent. He was allowed half an .hour to make his preparations. Gandhi wrote the following message to Vallabhai Patcl, not knowing that Patol had been already arrested: "Infinite is God's mercy. Please tell the people never to swerve from tho truth and non-viplonee, never to flinch, to give their lives and all to -win Swaraj." Miss Slade packed up the spinning wheel, cooking utensils, and books, including a volume inscribed by Mr. Mac Donald "With kindest regards and warmest memories of the Round Table."
Half an hour later GanShi began the drive of 120 miles in the chilly morning air to Yeravda Gaol. He entered the car smiling, but his wife broke down weepingly and begged Commissioner Wilson to take her with her husband.
Upon arrival a£ the gaol Gandhi gave the gaoler a broad smile of recognition as an old friend and turned unhesitatingly towards his former quarters, which had been hurriedly prepared for his reception.
