RAIN BELOW AVERAGE

Conditions were very dry in "Wellington at the beginning of December, and continued so until the middle of the I month, but thereafter a series of soaking rains relieved the situation, said Dr. E. Kidson, Dominion Meteorologist, in giving a summary to-day of the weather in Wellington last month. Before Christmas, lawns had already become green again, and there was generally a profuse growth of vegetation. The mean temperature for the month was approximately normal. There were many warm days, but the nights in the early part of the month wero rather cool.

The total rainfall recorded at Kelburn was about v per cent, below the average, and at Karori reservoir it was 3 per cent, below the average. The mean pressure at 9 a.m. was 29.905iu, or O.OoOin below normal. The mean maximum temperature was Go.Gcleg, which is equal to the average. The mean minimum was iW.Odcg, the average being 52.7i1cg. The approximate mean tem°porature was,• therefore, SD.ldeg, or .1 deg below the December average. The highest maximum was 74.2deg, which occurred on both the 14th and 15th. The lowest minimum was 42.3deg, on the Ist. On the grass the lowest minimum was S7.6de<r, on 3rd December. The mean run of the wind in 24 hours was 228 miles, at Kelburn Observatory, which is considerably below the average. The 24 hours in which there was most wind ended at 9 a.m. on the 23rd December, during which period a boisterous northerly blew, and a run of o.'ll miles was recorded. There was a brief northerly gale also on the 27th.

The total rain was 2.Tin, falling on 10 days. The heaviest falls were 0.52 in, on the loth; 0.87 in, on the 16th; and O.CSlin, on the 20th. At. Karori reservoir the total rainfall was 3.05 in, falling on 11 days.

There wore 254 hours of sunshine. This was 54 per cent, of the possible, and a good deal ahovn the "Wellington average for December of 2"".") hours. Lightning w;is seen on four ilays. and a thunderstorm w.-is responsible' for Uio heavy rain on the 20th.
