THE CHAMPION HACK
J.OIE DE.VAL TRIUMPHS
; _. Jbie.de Val demonstrated that she is- .; one.of the best hacks at present racing in
._ these parts when she added the Cham- ;' pion Hack Handicap at Tauherenikau ; yesterday to the good record she has ; built up for herself this season. ; This four- ,'• year-old full-sister to Degage opened th^ • present terra as still a maiden, but she : has now very nearly wou her way out ■; of hack ranks. She is well repaying the : patience bestowed on her by her'owner, Mr. E. Simpson, and her trainer, J. T. Young. Her success gave A. E. Ellis, his. ; third win for the day.in four mounts. ■ Once the field settled down Saltpot and Arajean were in the lead from Joie do Val, Lyrical, Retract,, Gay Court, Laudmark, Lady Rene, and Babel, but Eminent shortly afterwards ran up into position, and Gay Court and Emotion also improved.. The leaders, .made . the rest of- - the running to"the straight; wlrere Eminent, Joie de .Val, and Gay Court were ! pressing.' J.them, hai-d,". ;'_Jo.ic.;..de ..Val ehalj lcnged at the distance, and, iinishiug j better than anything, beat Eminent comJ fortably by a length, Arajean being another length away third. Gay Court was right up fourth, then came Landmark, . Emotion, Saltpot, Johnccn, and Lady Rene. ": - • * - Joie de Val was a short-priced favourite, being at very little better than evens. _ ..JShe df.!?«r. number ten jit.the..barrier, .but went "away better than' she 'often does, • and was .able .to. get..quickly on to the rail behind the leaders, where Ellis kept her till he -was. requiring, her to make her final Bid. Emotion, second -favourite- but not half as well backed as the winner, was never really a danger. Eminent covered a lot of extra ground, and fully deserved his second. Gay Court is another > who did not have the easiest of. passages, never being near the fence, but he finished very strongly over the last half-furlong. Landmark went a good race for a hurdler, but he has previously run ■ well on the flat.. Arajean stuck on gamely for third money- when beaten in the straight. Saltpot died out over the final stage.
