REMARKABLE SAVE
AGAINST HEAVY ODDS
FIRE AT THAMES
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.) , '■;'.' \ THAMES, This Day. Fir 6 broke out at 1.5 o'clock this morning in a block of two-story wooden shops in Pollen street. The cause is not known. Starting in Mr. Charles Bunting's electrician's shop, the fire extended to the premisos of Mr. William Carson, bookseller, and a portion of the shop of A. Court and Sons, drapers, on the south side, and of She Chong, fruiterer, and Henry Lowe, butcher, on the north side. The buildings were all old, having replaced premises destroyed by a big fire in 1876. A fairly strong wind was blowing, and it looked as if "the whole block would go, but with the aid of a good water supply the brigade made a remarkably good save. The wind dropped during the fire, and this greatly aided the brigade's work. £.t one time it vras feared that the Baptist Church at the rear of Court's premises would catch. V
Bunting's, Carson's, and Court's shops were owned by Mr. R. B. Hudson, of Thames, and She Chong's shop by Mr. F. Vollemaere. Mr. Bunting had £3000 insurance on his stock. Tho other insurances are not available. Bunting's and Chong's shops were gutted. The stock upstairs at Carsou's was burnt considerably, but Mr. Carson's library anil general shop stock were mostly damaged by water. Court's reserve stock of clothing upstairs was damaged by fire- and tho other stock by, water. The lower part of Chong's shop was practically empty owing to the holidays.
It is considered that the brigade, lighting against heavy odds, made a remarkable save.
