NEW PLYMOUTH FORM
A LINE FOR STRATFORD
(Special.—By "Hurry On.")
NEW PLYMOUTH, This Day. Tho Tavanaki Jockey Club has every reason to feel gratified at the result of its recent meeting. The totalisator turnover, though showing a falling off, was quite satisfactory, and the club will come out with a fair profit. The To Awamutu-traincd and Tara-naki-bred Limeeu went two splendid races. On the opening day she was last six furlongs from home, but then put in a great run, and, joining the leaders two furlongs from the post, went on to win nicely. Similar tactics were adopted tho second day, but this timo the filly found Monalof improved as the result of her iirst day's outing, and had to be satisfied with second berth. Limeen's trainer, H. L. Kussoll, also led iv another winner in the two-year-old Miss Lorraine, who carried off the juvenile on tho second day in hollow fashion. She was very unlucky to loso on the opening dny, when, with the race won at the distance, her youthful rider lost an iron and was then beaten homo by Broken Eule and Merry Way. Novertheless, this half-sister to the_ Auckland Cup winner, Admiral Drake, is a smart sort, aud will win more races this season. Tradesman fairly ran away with tha open sprint on tho first day. On tho second day, however, Orapai went with him from the rise of tho barrier, and ho was beaten two furlongs from home, eventually finishing well back. Gold Dawn went two solid races. She was unable to foot it with Tradesman on the first day, but on the second day was ridden in behind, and, coming with a great run on the outside, just got up in timo to beat Havering on the post. On tliis second occasion sho was very vigorously ridden by H. B. Stockley, who was so unfortunately fatally injured on tho following day at Ellerslie. The To Aroha trainer C. 33. Mailowes, turned King's Archer and Don't Lap out in grout fettle, and he scored two firsts and a second. King's Archer had an easy win from end to end in the Atiawa Hack Handicap on the opening day, and made a great effort to do the saino with 9.9 on his back on the second, only failing over the last hundred yards. Don't Lap was not too lucky in his first start, but on the second'day he was the last to leave tho barrier in tho hack six, then won, though he was rather lucky to got an uninterrupted passage. Both these horses should pick up somo rnoro stake money before returning home. Monalof is returning to the form that sho showed last autumn. Sho went a ■ slashing good race into second place be-1 hind Limeen the first day, and in her second attempt led from start to finish in the New Plymouth Handicap. Sho improved a lot as the result of her raco on the opening clay, and if she continues to go on right must be consiciered in the. Stratford Cup. Gibraltar silenced tho opposition in the Tikcrangi Hack Stakes on the first day in easy fashion, and was sent out a screamingly hot favourite the second day, but could do no better than finish a moderate third. However, these two races will sharpen him up for the Cup at Stratford, where he will again be ridden by L. Dulieu.- He is standing up to his racing well, and is showing no signs of tho soreness that prevented him doing his best at Kiccarton. All Humbug's run of successes came to an end tho second day, when, with 9.9 oir his back, lie was just beaten out of a place in the Juvenile Handicap. On tho strength of his stylish win in tho hack six on the first day, ho was favourite, but ho got away very badly, and at the end of a furlong was last in a strung-out field. However, he then put in a wonderful run, but his weight then told its talc, and he tired over the last bit. He should not bo long in making amends, and a good sprint should como his way before the season ends. Orapai was a bad failure. Ho went to the front in the Christmas Handicap on tho first day, and after having a fight with his rider for about five furlongs, collapsed and finished last. Ho was started in the open six on the final day, and, after leading into the straight, again faded into third place. Nevertheless, he has nover looked better, and may make amends at Stratford. On the strength of some great trials, "Easter Time came in for heavy support; in the Flying Handicap on Saturday, but after being well placed all the way, failed to finish on. He was tried over a distance of ground in his second start, and though not well ridden, made quite a respectable showing. He is to start in the seven furlongs event at Stratford. The Tiger has had a reputation for pace in Hawera for some time, "nd in tho Warea Hack Stakes on Monday he demonstrated that this reputation was no myth, for, hitting tho front after going a furlong, ho never gave the others a look in, winning with a lot in hand. He is a fine galloper, and will win in better company than he met here.
