HIGH DISDAIN'S WIN
FAST VILLIERS EFFORT
(From "Vedette."} SYDNEY, 23rd December. Those remember High Disdain racing in. New, "Zealand would hardly have expected, him to develop into a solid miler, capable, of winning in. the almost record time of lmin 36} sec under 8.9. Me accomplished this in the Villiers Stakes. at/Bandwict on Saturday. . -It-was-not a case of brilliancy, or winning all the way as sprinters do in these races', for he cflme from* the middle of- the field and had the race won a furlong from home. He was at good double-figure odds, duo in a measure to the leading, jockey, W. Cook,' persuading his ownor-trainer, J. Bangsley, to let him off to ride the favourite, Cathmar. The latter ran one of his sour races and was never going'like ; a winner over the last half-mile. High Disdain fs owner is better known in Australia by the' soubriquet of "Grafter." He has had an eventful career and is a picturesque Turf personality. He is one of'the fortunate
few- who' have been able to procure clemency from the A.J.Cr; for at one time he was under suspension for, life. He has only one or two horses in •work at.any time,, and is a shtewd judge of racing form. He has had. a good deal of trouble with High Disdain owing to the latter's linsoundness and that he could get the horse so fit is a tribute to his ability. He had in work in the spring a promising half-sister by High Force to Mollison, High Molly, but she was cased off after failing in tho Gimcrack States and Canonbury Stakes. SHOWINGS OF OTHERS. Port Said, runner-up to High Disdain, is one of the-most improved horses of the season. He is by' Egypt, the .brother to Desert Gold, who has sired some useful horses in Australia with Jimited opportunities. 5 * Pentheus carried 3.9 into third.place after not haying any of the luck of the race. He isa smart horse, who possibly just misses being really high class. George Price's, charge, Panola, the sister to Yertigern, was just beaten by Pentheus'for, third money. She is a most consistent mare, and is one that looks sure to win soon at Randwick, a course' that sees'-her at her best. ' First Acre waa not. brilliant enough, but,' as might be "expected, he was putting 'in:, good - Work at the - finish. Unfortunately he struck himself early on Saturday;-raced- in a bandage, and pulled up a trifle lame. He will have to be given'a short spell.
