EASTBOURNE" AFFAIRS
The monthly meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council was held on Thursday. -' The Mayor (Mr. S. F. Fisher) presided, and thero were also present Councillors J. F. Bockstrow, E. N. Battersby, Margaret Magill, A. Varney, W. F. Hornig, A. Walker, and C. A. Kcndle. The council expressed its approval of the proposal to limit the maximum speed on tho Hutt pipo bridge to 15 miles an hour and to impose a minimum of four miles an hour. Under the proposal the council's buses, being over 2} tons in weight, will be limited to a speed of 10 miles an hour. The Muritai Tennis Club was granted thp use of three of the council's tennis courts at Kona Bay'on 26th, 28th, and 29th December for the East Harbour tournament. ; • The sanitary inspector reported that no cases of infectious diseases had been notified in tho borough in November. * Permits for eight buildings to a total value of £1148 were issued in November. Traffic returns for November, with figures for the same month last year in parentheses, were presented as follows: —T.S.S. Muritai: Numtier of passengers carried, 19,278 (17,093); distance steamed, 600 miles (570); number of round trips, 40 (38); oil fuel used, 24 tons (25.5). S.S. Cobar: Passengers, 13,263 (13,469); distance steamed, 1965 miles (1815); number of round 'trips, 131 (121); coal used, 57 tons (54). During the month the council's buses ran 489 trips to Wellington, covering 18,026 miles and using 1946 gallons of benzine. In report for November the Town Clerk (Mr. C. L. Bishop) said that rates were coming in steadily, but the amount collected to date was approximately £800 less than at the same dato last year. Of the rates outstanding at 31st March last; £.800 had been collected, and overy endeavour was being mado to collect the balance. A start had been made with the erection of tho bathing shelter near tho Bona Bay wharf, with the provision of a suitable motor parking area in the samo locality. The Novombor traffic receipts in the ferry department showed an increase of £70. To the end of November the receipts in this department are approximately £.400 less than for the corresponding period last year, while the trading expenses Avere approximately £.600 less. The receipts for the month in tho bus department showed a fallingoff of £150 as compared with the same month last year, and to dato the decrease in revenue amounted to £1050. Trading expenditure had been reduced'by £500. This form of transport being dearer than the ferry service •was showing a decrease, as many people were compelled to take tho less expensive. All things considered, however, the position was satisfactory.
