SERVICE TO THE CITY
LATE SIE JOHN LUKE
CITY COUNCIL TRIBUTE
The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hidopj at a special meeting of the City Council yesterday afternoon, expressed the deep regret of councillors and citizens at the death of Sir John Luke, and moved the following resolution: "That this council records its deep regret at the death of Sir John Luke, and places on record its appreciation of hia great and manifold services to the community, and that there be conveyed to Lady Luke and the members of her family the expression of the sincere sympathy of the Wellington City Council and staff in their bereavement."
Mr. Hislop said that it would be difficult for anyone to pay a fined tribute than had been made by the Eev. Canon James. Sir John Luke's term of office had extended over a period of great stress, the social upheaval of 1913, the war, and the influenza epidemic, and throughout and on all occasions, with the loyal co-operation of Lady Luke, he had carried out his many duties in a manner which his fellow citizens had admired. His loss was a great one, but he had come to, the end of his life in full lionour and enjoying the respect of the whole of the conimunit3\
Councillor \V. H. Bennett said it had been his privilege to serve as a councillor during the late Sir John Luke's period of service as Mayor of the city. He spoko in high terms of his work for the city.
Councillor R. Semple expressed his deep regret at the loss Wellington had sustained in the passing of Sir John Luke. He had not been a member of the council under him as Mayor, but he had been closely associated with him during the period of the driving of tho Orongorongo tunnel, and knew him to bo in all things a straight-forward, honest, and upright man. One could not express in words one's real appreciation of the service given by the late Sir John Luke to the city; his work, living after him, would remain his epitaph. Tho motion of regret and sympathy was carried in silence.
