CYCLING CONTROL
SETTLEMENT REACHED
LONG DISPUTE ENDED
As a result of negotiations between representatives of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association and tho New Zealand Union of Cyclists, a settlement is reported to have been reached in the long dispute that has taken place in regard to the question of the control of amateur cycling in Now Zealand. Conferences have been held during the past few weeks which have resulted in a scheme of control being drawn up, bringing together the N.Z.A.A.A. cyclists and those who have been riding under the rules of the N.Z.U.C. The settlement, it is understood, is subject to confirmation from tho professional cycling body in the South Island, and this is expected to arrive in time for the meeting of the Council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association to-night.
Tho history of the dispute goes back to the early part of last year. It originated in Auckland, and at tho annual meeting of the Port Nicholson Amateur Road Cycling Club in April of last year, after lively proceedings, a motion to break away from the control of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association was carried. Those who supported the motion linked up with the new organisation, the New Zealand Union of Cyclists, which had come into existence in Auckland. There were some members of the club, however, who decided to remain loyal to the N.Z.A.A.A. The result was that since April, 1930, there have been two Port Nicholson Clubs, one affiliated to tho N.Z.A.A.A. and the other to the N.Z.U.C., operating' during the road season in Wellington, and N.Z.A.A.A, riders who joined up with the other organisation were automatically suspended from competing in both track and road events held under N.Z.A.A.A. rules.
It is expected that the joinder that has now been made will have the effect of strengthening interest in the sport and placing it on tho pedestal it occupied a few seasons ago. The numbe:: of riders in Wellington has increased, and it is considered that tho sport should boom again.
