PARKING FEE
TO MEET TRAMWAY DEFICIT
COUNCILLOR'S SUGGESTION
• A suggestion that the deficit in. the accounts of the AVcllington Tramways Department should be met by the imposition of a parking fee for motorcars was made by Councillor F. Mcadowcroft at a meeting of tho City Council yesterday afternoon.
He argued that one of- the reasons for the deficit was that many of the people who formerly used the trams now came into the city in, motor-cars, and also brought their neighbours with them. These neighbours contributed 2s a. week or so to the cost of their friend's car. The result was that the city lost revenue. "If these car owners had to put their cars in a garage," he said, "they would have to pay a fee. I suggest that they ought to be compelled to take out a licence to park their cars in tho streets. I know that my suggestion will bo unpopular with the motorists, but I propose that the licence be fixed at £.5 per year. This would work out at 4d per day, and the motorists would be able to park thencars in the areas which have been set asido for the purpose. By this means the council would derive an income by which it could meet the deficit on the trams."
