FOLLOW-ON SCHEME
The Chambers of Commerce in the different centres havo been requested by-the executive of, the Associated Chambers to forward an outline of their ideas upon the subject of unemployment.of boys to the Dunedin Chamber of Commerce, which- will'arrange and co-ordinate the various schemes ■ submitted. ■ ■-..■■■- - -•■ ■■■-' •-■ In the course of a report prepared by, a Committee of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce it is. stated:-—"WJien one considers that of the exports-f rom New,1 Zealand over 95 per .. cent. are furnished ■ from primary- industry, and that ;of th'e> . Dominion's total production probably three-fourths could be'estimated as, coming ! direct from primary production, it is! desirable that avenues be explored that would give-greater opportunities to- j young people to take up fanning oc-j enpations. . . . Your Committee has had brought to its notice a,scheme promoted by the Wellington V.M.C.A. in { conjunction with the- ■ Botary • Club for a five weeks' Agricultural training arid Holiday Camp for boys who are unemployed or are the. sons of unemployed fathers;.. . Such a short period as five weeks does not meet the case of permanent employment, but it is suggested that •with the co-operation of" the Government some follow-on scheme might be evolved for. those boys who show an.aptitude for country pursuits after they have had this camp, experience. With .similar camps organised in the various districts through New Zealand, : there should be the nucleus, of a scheme' that. would be well worth trying out. , The boys showing keenness could be sent on j to blocks of land, under competent over-1 seers. It is understood there are such blocks at'present unoccupied and undeveloped in some of the central areas of the Ndrih. Island, such as the pumice lands which,- after several' years* devel-1 opment, are;capable of being broughtto •a productive stage. It -would;be an advantage if areas could be selected' adjacent to one another, and comparative data would then offer as to the /progress made,, and results'would indicate whether th'_e Government would be justified in going still further with "the* scheme as a matter of national policy."
