Kindergarten Children. Original and very attractive invitations have been sent out by the children of the Tarauaki Street Kindergarten, inviting their friends to their Christmas party. Tho party will be held in the Wesleyan Hall, Ta'ranaki street, on Saturday afternoon, 12th December. A Pleasant Party. A particularly pleasant afternoon was spent at the home of Mrs. Lundius in Shannon street recently, when, at her invitation, a number of the committee members of tho Women's Division of tho Now Zealand Farmers' Union met there to parcel-up goods for tho Country Kelief Fund. Many useful things had been made, some "from new and some from used materials, and after making up the parcels the visitors spent tho rest of tho time in sewing yet more gifts for Christinas. Afternoon tea was served and enjoyed, also some good music, and some monologues. Miss Lang, lion, secretary of ""the junior branch, was asked to take charge of the gifts. The afternoon was successful, from all points of view. Obituary. Severing an association with Palmerston North of 28 years, Mrs. Jessie Law passed away, at . her residence, "Willowbank," this week. Born at Dunedin, Mrs. Law was the eldest daughter ■of the late Mr. Andrew Marshall, of Naseby, Central Otago. She came to Palmerston North with her husband, the late Mr. Samuel Law, who predeceased her ten years ago. Mrs. Law was a woman of strong personality whose wide and capacity for understanding won for her a wide circle of friends. She was possessed .of a strong sense of duty, which manifested itself even in the closing stages of her long illness. She made many firm friendships, both in her business and private circles, and there aro many who will mourn her passing. Moro recently her practical sympathy was extended in generous measurel to a large number of refugees in the Hawkes Bay earthquake.' : Surviving members of Mrs. Law's family are as follows:— Mesdames W. Davis (Eanfurly), G. A. Evans (Otaki), G. A. Blundell (Palmerston North), C. L; Brice (Invercargill), and W. M. Duncan (Apiti), and Messrs. B. S. Law (Palmerstou North"), Arthur Law and Eric Law (Danncvirke). There aro also 15 grandchildren. Success of Dunedin Girls. • In a field embracing the whole of Victoria, Miss Myra Johnstone, a young Dunedin violinist, who is completing her training at Melbourne .University Conservatorium, has won an Ormond Exhibition as being the most distinguished violin candidate in her section (states the "Otago Daily Times"). She is the elder daughter of Mrs. K. Bridger Johustone, Dunedin, herself well known in professional and amateur musical circles. Auother success in the same field, of interest' in .Dunedhi, is tho winning of a similar exhibition by Miss Valda Johnstone as the most distinguished pianoforte candidate in her section. The two girls aro not kin, but Miss Valda's mother (nee Myra Montague) and Miss Myra's (nee Kitty ■Bridger) have always been close friends, and the former's mother (Mrs. Montague) was one of the best-known of the Dunedin musicians many years ago. Guides and Crusaders. A pleasant "break-Up" party and concert, followed by. a dainty supper, was given recently by St. Paul's King's Crusaders and St. Paul's Girl Guides in the Sydney Street Hall in aid of missionary work.' Among thoso present were Mrs. Sprott and the Bey. Gordon M'Kcnzie, of the parish. Tho items given by Crusaders and Guides consisted of piano solos, songs, dialogues, partsongs, recitations, fancy dancing, and a Christmas carol sung by tho Girl Crusaders. An enjoyable evening was brought to a close by the singing of the National Anthem. Parties at Porirua. . A very pleasant evening was given recently by the ladies of the Porirua Methodist Church in honour of Miss Gladys Hook, who was presented with a bronze firo screen. A musical programme was presented by friends and by the children of the Sunday school. Supper was served. A gift evening was also given in honour of Miss Hook by her friends at Porirua. Dancing and supper provided by Mrs. Ha&sall and Mrs. Phillips were much enjoyed. ESO Miles on Cycles. A cycling trip of about 550 miles has been undertaken by three Training College students, Misses C. Newman, O. Flewellyn, and J. Veale, whoso homes are on tho West Coast (states the "Christchurch Times"). They left Christchurch on Saturday to cycle home for their holidays. They will go to Greymouth via Blenheim and Nelson and down) through Westport. Tho same party some tiirio ago rode from Greymouth to the Franz Josef Glacier, covering eighty miles a day on that trip. On the present trip they aim at covering fifty miles a day. Bar Examinations. Nineteen women students of the four Inns of Court passed in. one or more of the subjects set at the Michaelmas Bar examinations, and three succeeded in the final, and are eligible for call -to the Bar when all other conditions have been complied with, states a London writer. ,
