GAME BIRDS
SHOETAGE NOT FELT
REPORT TO SOCIETY
MANY PHEASANTS SEEN
The supposed absence of game birds for shooting in the "Wellington acclimatisation district was dealt with in a special report prosentod to the Wellington Acclimatisation Society last evening by Mr. E. J. C. Wiffln, a member Of the council. From inquiries he- had made, he said, he found certain birds to be' more plentiful than ever. "Providing ono has a good dog, the birds aro there to bo flushed," he said. "While iv tho Manawatu district wo had no dog with us, and furthermore we were not looking for game. But no matter in which part of the district we may havo been, avc always heard a, cock pheasant, and WO were in many parts during the course of tho day. I mentioned this to Mr. Liggins, of Tokomaru, who informed me that ho would undertake to flush several cocks in many parts of the district, and his considered opinion is that game is more plentiful than in former years.
"This to me is quite, encouraging information in view of the more or less severe criticism which has been directed against the council. . "It is still further encouraging m so far that it would seem that the efforts of the council in connection with the liberation of game birds is showing good results. Duel? seem to be fairly plentiful all through tho Tokomaru Swamp. In parts quail' are to be had, and in two different parts of the district we saw Australian stubble quail. In fact wo saw game of evpry kind, all of which appeared to be doing well. "My observations confirm my opinion that the council should continue to rear and stock game birds, as they are Voiding their own."
