FOR WORKING WOMEN
A "CLUB" SUGGESTED
Tho fact that many of the older women who ,-ii'v looking for work find it very difficult to pay for their lodgings was mentioned at the meeting of the Women's Unemployment Committee at the Town Hall yesterday, and a suggestion was made that a cottage should bo obtained and used as a clubhouse for them. It was suggested that furniture might be obtained from people willing to assist, and one of the women taken as caretaker, with help in the work by those who had not jobs to do at different times. There the women could pay whenever they had the money, and would not be existing on charity (a thing which seems abhorrent to most of them), and a little help from the committeo could bo given when necessary. The matter received considerable discussion, and finally a sub-coinmitteo of "ways and means "-was appointed, consisting of Mrs. Hunter, Mrs. Lino, Misses A. Kane, and A. Kirk, who will report shortly.
It was mentioned by Colonel Swain that there had already been a meeting of various women's societies, the Y.AV.C.A., the-Girls' I'ricndly Society, and others with the Salvation Army, and accommodation had been offered, and was still available if necessary.
Tho question of the accommodation at the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board meetings was mentioned, and two members of the Social Service branch of that work spoke emphatically on the subject. All were assured that there was plenty of privacy for those who needed and wished for it. Special arrangements were made for the ■women to go separately from the men, but it had been found over and over again that they would not use them, but preferred general entrance and accommodation. Also the cases of girls only could be taken separately at the Y.W.C.A. where there was no question of publicity.
It was decided that the real difficulty facing all the committee is the unemployable section of the community, which is an ever-increasing one.
