CENSUS SHOCK
Swanscombe, near Nortbfleet, Kent, has had a big shock. The 1931 Census returns, just received by the council^ reveal that the population has increased by only 47, from 8494 to 8541, since 1921, says the "Daily Mail.' Until the returns came through, Swanscombe thought it was a growing place. More than 400 new houses have been, built in the past ten years, there_ has been no evidence of any large migrations, and nobody has complained that he was missed by tho Census men. "We feel so certain that a mistake has been made that we have taken the matter up with the authorities," said Mr. A. N. Ballard, tho deputy-clerk. "We were confident that we now had at least 10,000 people, but the authorities tell us that they can find no evidence of a mistake or a miscount. They point out that the number at persons aboard the training ship Arethusa, in the Kiver Thames, 'which comes in our area, was.2B9 fewer than, in 1921. We decline to swallow this as an explanation. We shall not rest until ■we get at the truth. It is 4 serious matter from the touncil*i !point of yiew.M ' '.' ' ■ ,
