LEVEL CROSSINGS
THE ACCIDENT RISK
EDUCATION TO DANGER
While there has been a material incrcHse in traffic accidents in California this year, a reduction in deaths and injuries at level -crossings is rSVealed in a report of the transportation engineer of the State Bailroad Commission, despite an increase in the number of motor vehicles in.the State-and an increase in the number of level crossings. The improvement in the situation is attributed largely Ho the co-operation of organised motorists in safety education activities designed to impress the need for special care at level crossings. The necessity for such efforts is emphasised by the fact that more than half of the accidents continue to occur at crossings protected by gates, watchmen, or automatic signals.
Commenting on level crossings as a traffic hazard, Mr. H. J. Brunuier, chairman oi! the Highways Committee of the Automobile Association, said: "Bailroad grade crossings are coming into existence in California more rapidly than they aro being eliminated. This is a situation which should receive the immediate attention of our authorities. While it is true that some of the crossing? which are being eliminated carry a large volume of both train and vehicular traffic, it is likewise true that every new crossing is a, potential death
trap."
