SYNOPSIS OF LAST 24 HOURS,
An intense depression has covered New Zealand extending over the greater portion of the Tasman Sea, Conditions became unsettled generally yesterday, and during and since last night tliere has been widespread rain, many heavy falls occurring, especially in districts with .a westerly aspect. Strong northerly to westerly winds havo prevailed, reaching gale force in places, but southerlles were blowing this morning in the far South in the rear of a low centre which has been located off the east coast of the South Island.
