FRANCE'S ACTION
DISCRIMINATING DUTIES
NO BREACH OF TREATY

Attention was called at question time in the House of Commons to the recent French decree imposing additional discriminating duties on imports from various countries, including Britain and tho Dominions. On behalf of the President of. tho Board of Trade, who was asked 'whether retaliatory measures were contemplated, it was stated that the whole question of appropriate action to be taken in the matter wasi engaging the serious consideration of His Majesty's, Government in the United Kingdom. , ' ''■"'. .
In^reply to another question on.this subject as to whether French action was in conformity with the most-fav-oured-nation treaty with France, it was stated that, although United Kingdom goods had received, most-favoured-nation treatment in France in-the matter of duties under Trench law. for some fifty years, thero was no treaty in forco under which either 'country-was bound to accord such treatment to the goods of the other
