WELLINGTON NORTH

MR. G. A. TROUP'S ADDRESS

Continuing his candidature for "Wellington North, Mr. G. A. Troup addressed about 250.electors in the Congregational Schoolroom, The Terrace, last evening. Mr. C. D. Morpeth presided. In view of the serious drop in revenue, the paramount need for reducing expenditure was emphasised by Mr. Troup. Borrowing and increased taxation would only aggravate the existing trouble. What was required was readjustment, so that no one in the long run would be really worse off. The cure for a great depression like the present was going to be a very painful one and it .must be the duty of the authorities to make the pain as little as possible to all. The land question and primary products were dealt with at length; increased production, Mr. Troup said, was vital. We must tackle also the industrial development problem. As a means of preventing depression in the future, or ameliorating its effects, the candidate suggested the adoption of a "compulsory equalisation" scheme which could be applied to individuals and would be in the best interests of the State. The proposal was something in the nature of an insurance or sinking fund. In reply to questions, he said he was in favour of physical and military training; also of national Prohibition, if there was a majority in favour of it. A vote of thanks and confidence was put and was declared carried, amidst cheers and counter-cheers.
