MEDICAL OFFICERS

IN INTERCOLONIAL SHIPS

1 With reference'to the cable from Sydney in last evening's "Post" stat. ing that in connection with the question of mail steamers between New Zealand and Australia carrying doctors, "action had been taken by the Minister of Transport with a view to instituting proceedings against the Union Steam Ship Company to test the applic&tioa of Section 133 of the; Navigation Act to New Zealand-registered ships trading between the Dominion and Australia" it is understood that the difference of opinion between the Union Company and the Australian authorities was on the question of the jurisdiction of the Commonwealth law, and not on the question of the necessity or- otherwise of carrying a doctor. Dr. E. Iv Fitzgerald is medical officer ■on the Maunganui, and Dr. T. M. Smith ii medical officer on the Marama.
