A CANCELLED MEETING

MR. M'LEOD'S REJOINDER

■ A reply was made at Upper Hutt last night by Mr. A. D. M'Leod, Coalition Beform candidate for the Wairarapa, to statements made' the pre^ vious evening by Colonel T. W. M'Dbnaldi, Official Coalition candidate' in reference to a meeting of Beform supporters held at Upper Hutt. Colonel M' Donald said only eighteen people turned up at the meeting, including the members of a family with not too British a name. ■Mr:' M'Leod said he would give Colonel M' Donald the credit of being misinformed, as he could not understand any gentleman making such a, statement. The circulars calling' the meeting were issued on behalf of the Young People's Beform Club of Wellington, and before the Coalition pact was made. As soon as it was known that a pact had been made the meeting was cancelled, and. only a few who did not know that turned up. The secretary of the Wellington Keform Club, although carrying a non-British name, was a. grandson of a one-time Magistrate of New Zealand, and the family as a whole were.highly respected British citizens, as were many • hundred other Wairarapa citizens whose grandparents were not of. British birth. Mr. M.'Leod said the facts he,had brought, out should give Colonel M'Donald a chance to withdraw or to apologise.
