WIDE INTEREST IN ELECTION
CANDIDATES IN FIELD
NOMINATIONS CLOSE TO-MORROW Nominations for the seventy-six European electorates in the Dominion close at noon to-morrow, and those for tho four Maori seats on Monday next. The widespread interest that is being taken in the election campaign is apparent from tho number of contestants who have been declared as in the field. The union of tho Reform and United forces on this occasion under tho Coalition banner has not resulted in any great diminutio in tho total number of candidates. At the last General Election in 192S there were 212 nominations for the pakeha seats; a careful tally of candidates who have been announced during the past few weeks indicates that the total on this occasion is not likely to exceed 200. One of the most remarkable features of that total is the fact that no fewer than 24 straight-out Independents are included. Up till noon to-day 37 nominations had been received by the Chief Returning Officer, Mr. G. G. Hodgkins.
